Heel pain is also known as Plantar fasciitis or heel spurs.Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition, often caused by a combination of factors such as excessive pronation, standing for long periods, a sudden increase in weight, increased activity levels without warming and stretching, poor footwear, or activities such as climbing ladders.
Symptoms include a sharp pain when the heel hits the ground first thing in the morning and after rest. Often the pain improves as you keep moving because, while inflammation builds up and tends to pool in the heel, muscles in your foot and calf help to pump and refresh your blood supply, relieving the inflammation and lessening the pain
The pain is caused by small tears and inflammation in the plantar fascia, the strap of connective tissue between the base of the heel and the underside of the forefoot (see diagram above). This is why you need to gently stretch before you put your foot to the ground, including first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. To do the stretch place one foot on your lap and gently pull back on your toes (see photo below), you should be able to feel the fascia as it will be tight. Hold the stretch for at least 20 seconds and repeat on the other foot. This specific stretch in the morning before putting your foot to the ground can help improve symptoms over a period of a few weeks.
Another exercise involves filling a plastic bottle with water (leaving room for expansion) andand then freeze it. Use this bottle twice a day, rolling your foot over the bottle about 20 minutes each time while sitting (eg while watching TV).
Make sure your footwear is supportive and has plenty of cushioning. If you have excessive pronation, wear an orthotic to control it.
Because gravity affects the drainage of the lower limb, any inflammation (especially in the heel) tends to be difficult to shift. You can reverse some of the negative effects of gravity by elevating the lower limb (make sure your heel is higher than your hip) especially after long periods of standing still.
If you have a job that requires you to stand in one spot for long periods, try to rock backwards and forwards on your feet to keep the blood flowing and ask your employer for a cushioned mat to stand on.

Good footwear will also assist and will reduce the chance of a recurrence.
If you are diabetic or high risk, any potential pressure area should be assessed by your podiatrist to prevent wound formation. if the condition does not improve, see your podiatrist.
