Corns are a relatively common problem caused by friction or pressure from tight or poorly fitting shoes.
Corns are the skin's response to circular friction and pressure. They often form over bony prominences and sometimes they are embedded in callus.
Corns are commonly located on the tops and tips of toes, between toes, sometimes in the nail groove (between the flesh and the nail), on bunions, and on the ball of the foot embedded in callus.
Corns become painful when the underlying tissues become inflamed; they can lead to a wound forming. Pain associated with corns can often be like a splinter sticking into the foot.
Soft corns form between toes and are rubbery and wet due to the increase in perspiration between the toes. They form when adjoining bones rub together.
A number of Foot Foundation products provide relief from the pain of corns including:
- Foot Foundation Gel Tube Elastic to cushion corns on toes.
- Foot Foundation Gel Sore Protector can be used to deflect pressure over corns where Tube Elastic won't fit e.g. on heels or bunions. Sore Protectors can be cut to shape (e.g. horse shoe).
- Foot Foundation Gel Tube Protectors for soft corns between toes.
- Foot Foundation Gel Toe Prop Support may prevent the formation of corns on the tips of clawed toes, and will reduce the pressure on the metatarsal heads.
These products cushion the corn and reduce the friction and pressure. By reducing the friction, the corns and calluses will tend to degenerate and disappear.
Ultimately it is important to identify and address the source of the friction causing the problem, for example by buying better fitting shoes.
If you are diabetic or high risk, any potential pressure area should be assessed by your podiatrist to prevent wound formation. Some corn treatments rely on application of salicylic acid to destroy the corn and therefore relieve the pain. While this can sometimes be effective, it can cause a wound which can be dangerous, particularly for a diabetic. None of the Foot Foundation products contain salicylic acid. If the condition does not improve, see your podiatrist.
